Rachel Maddow To Kick Even More Ass

Well this is just great news. Keith over at DKos:

Rachel Gets Her Own MSNBC Show
by Keith Olbermann
Tue Aug 19, 2008 at 02:05:19 PM PDT

Happy Now?
The network will be formally announcing this tomorrow, but I am pleased to inform you in this fully authorized leak, that as of Monday, September 8, our mutual friend Ms. Maddow will become host of her own show, on MSNBC, at 9 PM Eastern Time.

In the last four years, not everything in progressive media has gone well. Air America continues to die a slow death by dumping progressive talent and replacing it with milquetoast offerings. The strong netroots-establishment message coordination from the days of the Social Security fight doesn't exist during this election cycle at the Presidential level.

However, the rise of Keith Olbermann and now Rachel Maddow are true bright spots. Rachel is one of the smartest people I know, a great broadcaster, and an all-around cool person. So she'll certainly bring light to important stories otherwise ignored by everyone else in cable news. But Rachel will also draw an audience not necessarily predisposed to liberalism. With Rachel on the air, viewers will get the opportunity to watch real news instead of bluster - and I bet a sizable number will jump at the chance.

Congrats Rachel!

Is she Hannity to KO's O'Reilly?

I mean, it's good to have lefty voices and all, but Maddow doesn't even try to pretend.

i agree, she'll be a good "gateway".

her sense of humor goes a long way, too.  too many pundit cranks mistake mean-spirited snark for actual humor.  genuine satire comforts the afflicted and afflicts the comfortable, but i haven't seen too much of that on mainstream airwaves.  perhaps that will change now that she's on there.

I hope she's not dry.  I hope she sprinkles in some comedy, like her interview last Friday with the Bigfoot guys.

And when the moment calls for it, I hope she offers a stinging special comment.

I want her to lure in non-liberals with some candy and then feed them the truth.

Looks like Hillary supporters will always hold a grudge against KO.

The dichotomy you just proposed was between information and entertainment, and the example of Jon Stewart is pretty strong evidence for arguing that dichotomy is false.  You can be informed and entertained at the same time.  According to the Pew Research Center, Hannity & Colmes viewers are informed and entertained (though God only knows why), as are Daily Show and Colbert Report viewers (and I imagine regular listeners of "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" on NPR).

Though I don't think anyone has ever been informed or entertained by Andy Rooney--am I the only person confused as to why he spent six minutes this week on a prominent news show talking about how useful he finds umbrellas?

On my own, here I go... (none / 0)

Yesterday, a friend of mine and I were discussing via e-mail various products at ThinkGeek. Presents for parents, etc., nothing serious. She wants to get the mini-airplane for her father, I suggest the mini-tank for her mother in the event her father wanders into a no-fly zone, that sort of thing.

At one point, she e-mails me the link to the HTTPanties, a collection of panties that have HTTP error or status codes on them, humorously placed for the obvious double entendre. My reply: "No 402? I thought that'd be the most common one."

402, for the record, is "Payment required".

It was a joke. I expected my reply either to be "LOL" or a punch in the eye, since it was a fairly tasteless and mostly sexist joke.

Fortunately, I got the good response.

I made a tasteless joke. The audience found it funny, so we all moved on. The inference wasn't that I believed that all (or most) women were prostitutes, I saw an easy line, I took it without a second thought. The girl in question knows me well enough (by hearing what I say and seeing what I do) to know I'm not sexist, but also not one to skip an easy punchline, even when I should.

I don't know Keith Olbermann, nor do I think people who only watch his show know him.

However, there's a dichotomy that exists within most people. Humor goes places that reality doesn't. We talk about what we can and we joke about what we can't. I think in television, especially, it has the potential to go much further than it would in real life. In the television world, you don't have to look a person who is offended in the eye as they stare at you while you awkwardly chuckle at the punchline. All you can do is move on (or, worse, compound it with a follow-up punchline) and issue the apology the next day.

Nowadays, the issue is even more cloudy. We catch people in 30-second snippets, if that. We find one fault and use it to make more borderline content seem worse. Then we start taking bland statements out of context, sticking them next to one bad example and a bunch of borderline ones... it's not an accurate representation of who people are.

I've freely admitted before, I do not watch the MSM. I simply don't have the time (or, on most days, the stomach) for it. I've seen Olbermann's "Special Comments" on Digg often enough that I think I mostly agree with him. But I remembered that video you posted. I thought, if I perhaps completely missed who his on-screen persona was, maybe the WMC would be able to educate me. I checked out the website and they haven't made any major posts about him (do a search for Chris Matthews, on the other hand...). The only specific instance was one which he later apologized for, saying it came out completely wrong (which it obviously did).

So now we're faced with a dilemma. Is Keith Olberman a raging sexist or someone with a bad sense of humor? He's chosen a woman as his successor, featured her frequently, promoted her relentlessly... Unless there's a clip of him saying "Normally, I don't trust women, but Rachel's a lesbian and lesbians are hot," I think we can say he does not have a general antipathy towards women. He may have a general antipathy towards Clinton, but that's not unique and it's not sexism. There were plenty of perfectly valid reasons to dislike Clinton (or, more blandly, to prefer Obama) without requiring all of them to be declared "sexist".

I think I could very easily summarize my viewpoint like this:

When someone makes an insensitive joke, they could be sexist, but it doesn't mean that they are.

When someone is harsher on the female candidate than the black one, they could be sexist, but it doesn't mean that they are.

When someone continually insists on talking about how pretty his correspondents are, asking them to come closer to the camera or saying how they are "God's gift to men", yeah, that's sexist. (Man, I really can't stand Chris Matthews right now)

To answer your question directly, I think there is a disparity between who people think he is (or how he comes across on television) and who he actually is. I think, if you take the worst attempt at humor anyone's made and replay it constantly, you will think someone is sexist. And, in this past primary, if you mentioned any aspect that has ever been more often attributed to one gender than another in the context of Hillary, everything you ever said went under the most gigantic microscope you could imagine.

I don't think Olbermann is sexist. I think he's on a network with Matthews and that'll make anyone look bad, but I think a two-year old comment about Paris Hilton and statements against Clinton aren't enough to stick him with that label.

thank you... (none / 0)

for a well thought out response.  unfortunately i disagree with you.  in context and out of context.

now i know that ko took bushco to task, and for that he should be commended,  in context, ko was at a network that was complicit and not in the worst sexist offenses this cycle.  not liking clinton is one thing and the 'frat boy' culture at msnbc was seemingly propagated by him directly is another.  (that combined with questionable words and actions onscreen and off) make any person who values women's rights wonder.  by all means, if you approve of:

- KO thinks it is acceptable to judge women for their sexual choices.
-KO thinks women who make particular sexual choices are to be taken less seriously when they claim to have been assaulted.
KO thinks it's amusing to, um, "cleverly" invert a phrase often associated with domestic violence and use it to belittle women.

then by all means, there are plenty of other examples with other celebrities as well.

Did you know that he also fought against gender discrimination while he was at ESPN... imagine that!  How can a sexist be so non-sexist?  Simple, when the definition of sexist is changed to, "Saying anything negative about Hillary Clinton."

For example, "She voted for the war..." YOU SEXIST!

That should explain the apparent discrepancy... he's not a sexist blowhard, he just didn't support Hilary Clinton's scorched earth tactics...

Re: But Hillary did his show (2.00 / 2)

She also did Bill O'Reilly.

Hillary wanted to reach his viewers.  And she's not afraid of a tough interview or a hostile interviewer.  Hence the reason she also met with the editorial board of the Pittsburgh Herald Tribune, the paper owned by Richard Mellon Scaife.

Frankly, after KO accused her of being a racist, after O'Reilly spent years attacking her, and after Scaife made it his life mission to bring down her family, I think that it took GUTS for her to do those interviews and it highlighted her ability to talk to people who disagreed with her.

Re: Rachel Maddow To Kick Even More Ass (2.00 / 1)

It's nice to see MSNBC taking the leap with more progressive hosts. Rachel is about the only one worth listening to on AAR (America Left on XM) these days (where are you, SAM??).
I sure hope she doesn't drop her radio show.

Hidden for what appears to be spamming links.  If I'm incorrect, and your URL is legitimate, I'll apologize and change my rating.

I hid it due to what appears to be gay-bashing. If I'm missing something and I'm wrong, I'll change my rating as well.

I find it disturbing that every time KO issues a press release at Kos, it gets 200 million recs.

It's almost Alegrian or Darlin'esque in its predictability.

Re: Rachel Maddow To Kick Even More Ass (2.00 / 1)

Yeah, I mean, what's so special about major media and political figures making important announcements to the Netroots community before anyone else, and making efforts at outreach?  It's almost as if we have become a valuable constituency to them or something, like we're noteworthy (ugh, can you imagine?  It makes my 20-sided die shudder just thinking about it!).

Yikes (none / 0)

If it made your 30-sider shudder, then THAT would be big news.

Thanks Keith (2.00 / 1)

I appreciated how hard he must have pushed for this.  I also appreciate how hard all of us (and especially the Kossacks) pushed for this.

She absolutely deserves this show on her own merits.  That being said, it never hurts to have a patron or a friend helping move it along.  Sadly in business it isn't always what you know, but who you know.

I never considered Keith Olbermann to be a sexist.  He is a hothead and he's over the top and I can see why some of his remarks might have been seen that way.  I can't blame some folks for having come to that conclusion.  I just don't agree that he is one.  Keith Olbermann is one of my favorite television personalities.

Rachel Maddow is the other.  I guess I'll finally have a fair chance to see which one I like more.

Rachel (2.00 / 1)

If Rachel can avoid becoming a self righteous, biased blowhard like Olbermann- than I think she will be really successful.  She is very smart, and will hopefully bring the NEWS to the News- which isn't really MSNBC or FOX NEW'S forte- but we'll see.

Re: Rachel (none / 0)

I for one am glad KO is a self-righteous blowhard. Wingnut radio and Faux News are full of them and it has only served to harden their listener's views. It's about time somebody on our side grew a pair and learned to give better than he gets.

If some people on the left can't tolerate a tough approach, they should ignore politics and take up gardening. The nutcase right will not stop until we stop them; at this time, we must meet force with greater force.

The scalpel to Olberman's warhammer (2.00 / 1)

Olbermann has his hands full being the liberal equivilent to O'Reilly.  He hits the right with blunt force trauma.  Maddow should be able to really dig into the news like a surgeon into a patient and excise the deep tumors of government malfeasance.

Congratulations to you, Rachel.  You're a credit to all of us.

Re: Rachel Maddow To Kick Even More Ass (2.00 / 1)

Ms. Maddow will be an amazing addition to MSNBC.  After their rather shoddy primary coverage, and no I don't just mean Hillary bashing, it will be a nice change in the network.  What is nice about Ms. Maddow as opposed to KO or Pappa Bear is that she is an academic that has fallen into her role in the media.  She is not a news reader, she is not a media personality.  What has always been refreshing about her radio show is how well researched it is and very open, and very neutral her segments are.  She calls out stupid when she sees it, on both sides.  KO did this for a while too, but now he has taken to carrying the water just like Bill and Rush.  I hope she holds on to her power, grace, and independence.
